GERSTEL – a family business with tradition
This family-owned company, founded in a garage in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1967 and now run by the second generation, specializes in the development and production of devices and systems for instrumental chemical analysis, concentrating on sample preparation, gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (HPLC).
It has 110 employees in Germany, branches in the United States, Japan and Switzerland, as well as a global network of distributors who ensure that GERSTEL solutions are available and can be used worldwide.
The company offers its customers intelligent and, if required, tailored end-to-end systems. With its expertise in automated sample preparation, GERSTEL is always in demand when innovative solutions are needed.
Company growth poses tough challenges for intralogistics
The astonishing growth of GERSTEL GmbH & Co. KG has already necessitated several relocations. The last was in 2007 when the workforce moved into new company headquarters, designed with economic and ecological considerations in mind, at Eberhard-Gerstel-Platz 1 in Mülheim an der Ruhr.
The expansion of the company called for a more efficient and flexible intralogistics solution. Components and complete modules need to be placed in temporary storage then brought to the production line quickly. Three Hänel Lean-Lifts® and a Hänel Multi-Space® were installed to do the job.
Optimal use of space
The Hänel Multi-Space® comprises five storage units with two access points, and has an overall width of eight meters. Two of the storage units are located behind the Lean-Lifts®. The available floor space is used to optimal advantage and maximum storage volume has been achieved.
GERSTEL’s entire storage logistics are handled with the Hänel storage systems – all the logistics processes run completely via the lifts. Storage and retrieval operations are booked using barcode scanners and organized in the HänelSoft® storage management software. An interface to the company‘s enterprise resource planning system boosts work efficiency.
